Who Needs the New York Pre-Licensing Course?
Who is the course for?
- Teen Drivers: Teenagers under the age of 18 who are applying for a junior driver’s license or a senior driver’s license must complete the pre-licensing course before taking their road test.
- New Drivers: If you are a new driver applying for your first driver’s license in New York, you are required to complete the New York Pre-Licensing Course as part of the application process.
- Out-of-State Transfers: Individuals who are transferring their out-of-state driver’s license to a New York driver’s license may also be required to complete the New York Pre-Licensing Course, depending on their age and driving experience.
Mature Drivers: Some mature drivers (those aged 18 and older) who have never held a driver’s license before may also need to complete the pre-licensing course before applying for a New York driver’s license.
Drivers with Suspended Licenses: In some cases, individuals with suspended driver’s licenses may be required to complete the New York Pre-Licensing Course as part of the reinstatement process.

ONLINE REQUIREMENTS:
You are ONLY eligible for the New York Pre-Licensing Course if you are 18 years old*.
- This course is a pre-licensing course to make sure you have the basic knowledge you need about laws and safety practices to be a successful driver. This course is not to help you pass the road test.
*New York DMV will not process any student completions if the driver does not meet the minimum age requirements.
CLASSROOM INFO
- If you are a teen and desire the junior driver license (Class DJ) or desire the junior motorcycle license (Class MJ) then you must take the course in-person.
