Ohio Behind-the-Wheel Training

If you’re looking for a driving school or are unsure what the State of Ohio’s behind-the-wheel training requirements are for your situation, select your age to see specific information that applies to you. Teens are required to take the Ohio 24 Hour Driver’s Education Course and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel practice with a licensed driving instructor from a driving school in your area.

Important Notes:

  • You must be at least 15 years and 5 months in order to take the Driver’s Ed Course.
  • At 15 years and 6 months, you can get a temporary permit from the BMV.
  • You will get a Certificate of Enrollment after you spend 2 hours in the Driver’s Ed Course. You need to give that to the instructor at your driving school before you can start any behind-the-wheel training.
  • You will get a Certificate of Completion once you complete the course. You will need to give that to the instructor before they will certify that you’ve met the state requirements for your permit.
